PNY Launch Custom GeForce GTX 1060

More and more graphics card manufacturers have started to unveil their own takes on Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1060 product, and the latest one to join the fold is none other than PNY. The company has just unveiled its GeForce GTX 1060, which comes with a custom-design PCB while keeping Nvidia’s reference clock speeds  of 1506 MHz core and 1709 MHz GPU Boost. The memory also runs at 8 Gbps, and even though this product will likely perform the same when compared to Nvidia’s reference card, it definitely boasts better aesthetics thanks to its custom cooling solution.

Speaking of which, the cooler includes a custom aluminium fin-stack complemented by two black 70 mm fans. Considering the fact that the card wasn’t overclocked out of the factory, it still relies on a standard 8-pin PCIe power connector. As far as pricing is concerned, we’re looking at asking prices of about $279, which is quite a bit more when compared to AMD’s RX 480.

Just in case you’re looking for a lightweight, simple-looking USB flash drive that offers generous storage capacities as well as USB 3.0 transfer speeds, PNY has just unveiled the HP x765w flash memory drive. As far as looks are concerned, this product comes with a black and white monochrome design, while its ergonomic body and anti-fingerprint finish ensure protection from scratches and finger stains respectively. The lidless body features a retractable connector and a one-hand slide mechanism that guarantees quick and easy operation, while a loop hole at the base of the drive allows it to be attached to car keys, bags or wallets without any issues.

With a weight of just 8.8g, you’ll definitely need to bind this thing to heavier objects, otherwise you’ll probably just forget about it in your pocket. Available storage capacities range from 16GB all the way up to 128GB, all versions benefitting from USB 3.0 transmission, which enables ten times faster read and write speeds when compared to USB 2.0. Obviously, computers equipped with USB 2.0 ports will also support the HP x765w. And speaking of compatibility, this product works just fine with Windows 7, 8, 10 and Mac OS: 10. 3 and above. The HP x765w is accompanied by a limited warranty of 2 years, and it is also quite affordable, as the 32GB version is currently priced at about £12.00.

HP

PNY is regarded as one of the leading companies in flash memory products and has an excellent reputation. Recently, PNY entered into an agreement with HP to manufacture their latest storage device, the x765w.  The HP x765w supports the USB 3.0 protocol which provides ten times faster speeds than USB 2.0. The drives will be available in a number of capacities ranging from 16GB to 128GB and come with a 2-year warranty as standard. According to the press release, the pen drives feature an ergonomic design which makes it easier to grip and has an anti-fingerprint finish. This should prevent the product from looking slightly worse for wear after hefty use.

HP

The HP x765w weighs 8.8g, measures 10mm x 21mm x 55mm (HxWxL) and has an integrated strap hole. When it comes to performance, the basic 16GB drive can deliver a maximum read speed of 20MB/s and 70MB/s write while the 32GB-128GB models are guaranteed to offer a minimum 30MB/s read and 75MB/s write.  As you can see, this isn’t the fastest set of speeds available today but HP/PNY appear to be targeting a very competitive price point. Unfortunately, this isn’t known as of yet. Personally, it seems an odd decision to release a USB 3.0 drive when USB 3.1 is becoming more popular. Although, it’s a solid product and will be useful to certain PC users.

PNY

PNY’s XLR8 range revolves around the highest quality of components and factory overclocks in the company’s repertoire. Previous models such as the PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC performed admirably and featured a really attractive shroud design. The latest product is towards the higher-end and based on the GTX 1080. The PNY GTX 1080 XLR8 OC combines a reference PCB with a custom cooling solution. Additionally, the graphics card has a factory overclocked 1708MHz core, 1848MHz boost and 8GB GDDR5X memory running at 10,000MHz.

69b

The product’s cooling apparatus has a split aluminium fin-stack heatsink and 8mm thick nickel-plated copper heatpipes which effectively manage the thermal loads. Also, the heatsink is ventilated by three 80mm fans with superb airflow. As expected, the fans switch off during scenarios when the GPU isn’t doing much. In terms of power requirements, the GPU has a single 8-pin PCI-E which should be more than enough to leverage maximum performance. Connectivity-wise, the PNY GTX 1080 XLR8 OC comes with three DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b and a dual-link DVI-D. According to PNY, the graphics card will retail for a price of $659.99 in the USA. This is a reasonable price given the factory overclock and I’m hoping to get hold of a review sample in the next week.

pny-cs2030-series-m-2-nvme-ssd

In recent years, NVMe and PCIe drives have been the ones pushing the performance limits. Moving beyond the limits set by ACHI and SATA, the new drives offer dramatically improved performance. To supplement their mainstream SATA SSDs, PNY has announced the new NVMe M.2 CS2030 Series of solid state drives.

As we’ve come to expect of most NVMe PCIe SSDs being released these days, the M.2 2280 form factor is being used. The CS2030 offers up a total of 4x PCIe 3.0 lanes for a total of 32 Gbit/s of bandwidth. For the controller, PNY has chosen the Phison PS5007 and paired it with MLC NAND. This allows for sequential transfer speeds of up to 2,750 MB/s reads and 1,500 MB/s sequential writes. 4K random access performance is rated at up to 210,000 IOPS reads, and 215,000 IOPS writes.

Coming in both 240 GB and 480 GB capacities, the new drives are expected to be priced at $179.99 and $329.99 for the 240 GB and 480 GB models respectively. While they are a premium compared to SATA drives, for those that want the extra performance, they are likely well worth it. They are also backed by a 3-year warranty as well. It will be interesting to see how these drives fare against the current match of NVMe M.2 SSDs.

PNY Launches CS1311b Budget SSDs

PNY CS1311b 1

After Samsung first introduced 3D NAND several years ago, the rest of the industry has finally caught up. Starting in 2016 and into 2017, many SSD manufacturers have started to update their lineups from planar NAND to 3D NAND and PNY is the latest to join in. The company has just announced their new CS1311b series of budget entry-level SSDs featuring 3D TLC NAND. This follows up on the vanilla CS1311 which uses planar TLC NAND.

Coming in the standard 7 mm-thick 2.5-inch form factor, the CS1311b is the standard SATA III SSD. Featuring just the 128 GB and 256 GB capacities, the drives use Micron’s 3D TLC NAND. The 128 GB drive manages up to 510 MB/s reads and 410 MB/s writes, while 4K speeds are 42,000 IOPS and 82,000 IOPS for random reads and writes respectively. For the 256 GB model, we have up to 560 MB/s sequential reads and 510 MB/s writes, while 4K speeds are 80,000 IOPS and 81,000 IOPS for random reads and writes respectively

PNY CS1311b SSD 2

As you can see from the image, the SATA form factor is pretty overkill for budget SSDs these days. The PCB with all the working parts takes up less than half of the enclosure. While PNY has not revealed pricing, it will likely come in where the CS1311 currently sits. I suspect that we are seeing a controller update as well from the Phison S10 controller to the Phsion S11, both single core designs,  due to the requirement for LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) 3D NAND support.

PNY GeForce GTX 1080 Ti XLR8 OC Video Card Details Surface

Details about PNY’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti XLR8 Gaming OC video card are now available, showing the company’s custom design for NVIDIA’s latest generation flagship video card. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti XLR8 Gaming OC uses the XLR8 triple fan design and is a considerably longer video card than most other manufacturer’s designs at 313 mm or 12.36-inches long with a dual-slot height. The PCB itself underneath is the reference NVIDIA design similar to the Founder’s Edition model, having a 7+2 phase VRM for the CPU+memory. The heatsink cooler appears to be fully nickel plated and uses a four-heatpipe design with two sets of aluminum fin arrays.

The PNY GeForce GTX 1080 Ti XLR8 Gaming OC comes out of the box with a base core clock of 1531 MHz and a boost clock of 1645 MHz. It has 11GB of 11Gbps GDDR5X on a 352-bit memory interface with a bandwidth of 484 GB/sec.  The card uses the standard GTX 1080 Ti 6-pin and 8-pin power connector towards the front. For display output, it has three DisplayPort 1.4 connectors with one HDMI 2.0b connector for a maximum resolution of 7680 x 4320 @ 60Hz. The product render shows a DVI connector in the rear IO but this feature is not listed in the official product specifications sheet of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti XLR8 OC PNY part number VCGGTX1080T11XGPB-OC video card.  Plus if it uses the reference Founder’s Edition GTX 1080 Ti PCB then it definitely lacks a DVI port.

Introduction

PNY GTX 1070 XLR8 OC Gaming 8GB Graphics Card Review

Not all graphics cards are created equally, such as this GeForce GTX 1070 from PNY. It takes the stock card and makes it even faster than before. PNY is well-known for their premium quality aftermarket graphics cards, and the XLR8 OC Gaming delivers faster clock speeds, a powerful cooling solution, a slick design, and hopefully fantastic performance too.

The stock GTX 1070 delivers a 1506/1683 stock and boost graphics clock, while the new card from PNY ups that to an impressive 1607/1797 MHz, quite an improvement, and one that should no doubt deliver improved performance. OF course, extra power is required to do so, with the card pulling a 150W TDP, and while it still uses the same 8-pin connector, the factory overclock does mean more heat, so that triple fan cooling solution should help keep things nice and cool, even when pushing the card to its limits.

Equipped with all the latest features you would expect from a 10xx series card, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 is a robust chipset, so let’s jump in, take a closer look at what it has to offer, then fire it up on our test bench!

Potential Kingston & PNY Scandal: Switching SSD Components After Reviews!

KingstonSSD-640x353

Over the last few months, evidence has been gathering that storage manufacturers Kingston and more recently PNY have been pulling a bait and switch tactic on their consumers. What this means is that after the initial hardware release and of course the reviews of their products have been written, the companies are then changing the hardware configuration. This has left many customers venting that they’ve been cheated into buying a product they may not have wanted had they known the hardware had been changed. This can be especially true for those who buy their hardware based on reviews, such as the reviews we do here at eTeknix. If we tell you a product gives X amount of performance based on its specifications, then those specifications are secretly changed, then our review is worthless and you as a consumer may end up with an inferior product.

According to a Tweaktown blog post, the new PNY Optima drive should feature the Silicon Motion controller, but the user who bought it later discovered that it features a different firmware and a different SandForce based controller. TweakTown investigated this issue and contact PNY who responded with; “yes we did ship some Optima SSD’s with SandForce controllers, but only if they meet the minimum advertised performance levels.”

Unfortunately minimum performance levels is about as vague as things get, especially when manufacturers usually use the term “up to” for their performance figures. Such as the PNY drives spec sheet which reads “up to 60,000 IOPS”, not to mention the level of change that their testing equipment and methods can mean when recording those figures.

The same can be said for the popular Kingston V300 drive, a product that has been on the market for around a year now, but appears to have been switched from synchronous to asynchronous NAND. The downside of this being that the latter can be slower than the other in certain situation, dependant on the configuration, than the parts that were initially installed in these drives. This is reflected in the charts below, which compares the standard hardware to the asynchronous NAND hardware.

robocopy_mr

PCMark-Kingston

In short, this isn’t acceptable, selling one product under the pretence that it’s actually made of different components is bad for business and I suspect that now the alarm has been rung, more issues like this will soon be discovered, perhaps even from several other brands. If the issue isn’t resolved soon, then it could mean that many of the storage reviews that have already been published, could now be a complete waste of time, or at least require the modified products to be re-tested.

Thank you ExtremeTech, Tweaktown and NordicHardware for providing us with this information.

Who Are The Biggest SSD Vendors Of 2013? The Figures Are Out!

$

samsung_840_evo

Samsung continued its relentless expansion in the SSD market last year as it boosted its market share from 23.2% in 2012 to 28.5% in 2013. The figures produced by analytics firm Gartner reveal some potentially worrying trends for the SSD market. The SSD market is now tending towards an oligopoly as the five biggest vendors increased their market share from 55.4% in 2012 to 65.8% in 2013.

gartner_ssd_revenue_market_shareIntel saw a decline in its share falling from 14.7% to 13.1% market share. SanDisk showed huge growth, more than doubling their share from 5 to 11.7% in that 1 year period. Micron also made good progress with their Crucial brand, rising from 3.3 to 6.9% of the market, again that’s more than a doubling.

gartner_ssd_revenue_market_share_2012_2013_1

With Micron, SanDisk and Samsung all doing so well, who lost out? Well aside from Intel, Toshiba has also taken a fairly sizeable hit. However, the real losers are the “others” category: that’s SSD manufacturers who mainly rely on (all or some) parts produced by other vendors. These brands include Kingston, OCZ (now defunct and owned by Toshiba), Corsair, G.Skill and PNY among many others. Of course OCZ are now part of Toshiba meaning that they make their own NAND and controllers but many other brands will be forced out of the market by the “big boys” like Samsung, Intel, SanDisk, Micron and Toshiba who can all make the majority of their own parts such as the controllers, NAND, DRAM cache and firmware required for an SSD product. The advantage of making it yourself mean you have a stable reliable supply and can produce it for the cheapest cost, not to mention certain vendors may simply stop supplying parts to rival companies when things really hot up. We’ve already heard rumours that Micron may stop selling its NAND to rival SSD vendors, or reduce supply at the very least.

PNY has shared the information on the new LEGO USB Flash Drive. This is great news for me, or rather my three nephews. They have been pestering me since they heard about this the first time around Christmas, and I haven’t been able to get them for them yet. That has changed now and the LEGO brick USB stick is available in 16GB size for $12.99. That is actually not a bad price considering it is LEGO branded. Each LEGO USB Flash Drive also comes with an additional LEGO brick for “extra building fun”.

  • Includes one LEGO USB Flash Drive and one LEGO brick
  • The LEGO USB Flash Drive has a capless, sliding design
  • The included key-fob easily attaches to the key ring for on the go storing and fun
  • The LEGO USB Flash Drive and additional LEGO brick are compatible with all LEGO brick toys for endless fun

prev_LEGO-USB-Flash-Drive-Blue-ra

Specifications wise the stick is USB 2.0 and there are no official speed descriptions. This most likely means that it will be around 7-10MB/s write and read speeds. It is compatible with most PC & MAC laptop and desktop computers with an available USB 2.0 port. The stick measures 1.20 x 0.50 x 0.22 inch and has an operating temperature of 0° to 60° C and a storage temperature tolerance of -25° to 85° C. It comes with a One-Year Warranty and free technical support.

For now the drive only appears to be available in blue, but I’m sure that will change. Specially considering the first image above.

Thank you PNY for providing us with this information.

Budget Friendly SSDs!

PNY Technologies is known as one of the leading flash memory producers across the world. Of course, it goes without saying that their latest offering, is something to be excited about. Introducing the CS1311 SSD that is not only fast but also budget friendly.

Low Cost, High Speed

The CS1311 comes in 4 variants, in 4 price ranges. The 120GB costs only $59.99, 240GB is $99.99, 480GB is $189.99 and the spacious 960GB will set you back $349.99. However, the low-cost does not reflect on the quality of the drives. Operating at 20x Faster than a conventional HDD, the CS1311 is very capable, perfect for a system upgrade to speed up slow boot times. Furthermore, the drives deliver read and write speeds of up to 550 MB/s alongside random IOPS read and write upto 90,000 IOPS.

Good Looks for Less

The CS1311 comes in a very sleek, modern and contemporary chassis. A full black, textured coating with red accents and aluminium front, make for a very premium feeling drive. Even despite the lower price tags, the unit certainly looks like a much more premium, higher cost SSD. The drive is ultra-portable coming in at 2.5″ form factor at only 7mm deep. Shock proofing is present too and is a very welcome addition. Combine all of this with a low-power function that enables the CS1311 to consume less power than a standard HDD with minimal heat output and zero noise operation. You are left with an incredibly capable, attractive little SSD that will prove a fantastic addition to your setup.

Where to get Yours?

PNY take great pride in presenting to you, the CS1311. An SSD that fits the budget range with premium range features. What’s more, is that they provide a competitive 3 year warranty with each drive too. You can purchase one for yourself here.

PNY XLR8 GTX 1080 Ti Graphics Card Review

PNY XLR8 GTX 1080 Ti

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card series has been with us for some time now, and that means we’ve got plenty of aftermarket products from many of the top gaming brands around the world. The latest we have in the eTeknix office is the PNY GeForce GTX 1080 Ti XLR8 gaming OC graphics card. This new card comes with a reasonable factory overclock, taking the graphics cards boost speed up to 1645 MHz, and it keeps all this performance in check with its new triple fan cooler and a full-length aluminium back plate.

This isn’t the craziest GTX 1080 Ti we have seen to date, but it does seem like a big upgrade in terms of cooling performance over the reference model and that means it should run cooler, quieter, and harder for longer while you are gaming. This is especially true since PNY say the new cooler performance three times better than their previous generation cooler. The only downside to this design is but it doesn’t appear to have a 0 RPM operation mode, a feature that is often lacking on PNY graphics cards; at least on the ones we have tested in the past.

Fast and Silent

“The latest addition to the ultimate gaming platform, this card is packed with extreme gaming horsepower, next-gen 11 GBps GDDR5X memory, and a massive 1GB frame buffer. PNY’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti XLR8 Gaming Edition offers fast performance and silent operation.” – PNY

Specifications

Obviously, this graphics card includes all the features you would expect of a 1080 Ti. It still features 3584 CUDA cores, 11GB of VRAM, SLI support, and much more. Those who are eager to run the cards in SLI will be happy to know that it’s a strict deal slot design, so it shouldn’t conflict in motherboards that have tighter spacings.

“Storage technology has changed dramatically in no time. A few years ago it was unimaginable to develop a consumer-friendly SSD with almost one terabyte of memory. That’s why we’re proud to announce the newest addition to our CS900 family.
